The carrier is USS Ranger, CV-4, back from duty in the Pacific Theater and decommissioned in October of 1946.

The Ranger, launched in February 1933, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be designed and built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier. Each of its six boilers had its own funnel. Three can be seen on the starboard side in this photo. For flight operations the funnels could be lowered outboard to horizontal.
